Four Lenses on Revelation — Futurist

four-lenses-on-revelation

The frame

1:19 divides the book — what you have seen, what is, and meta tauta, what must be after. In dispensational readings the third clause opens at 4:1, so the vision of 1:12-20 is the things which are and chapters 4-22 are still future.

The seven letters

Often the same seven ages — and in the pretribulational form, with the church removed at 4:1.

Come up here

Pretribulational dispensationalism only: the rapture, which is why chs. 4–22 concern other people. Mid-tribulation, pre-wrath and post-tribulation all reject the reading.

The seals

The first half of a future seven-year tribulation.

The 144,000

Literal ethnic Jews, 12,000 per tribe, evangelizing during the tribulation.

The trumpets

Literal ecological and military catastrophes still to come.

The two witnesses

Two literal individuals in the tribulation — Moses and Elijah, or Enoch and Elijah.

1,260 days · 42 months

A literal three and a half years — the tribulation’s second half.

The woman and the dragon

National Israel; the flight is Israel preserved through the tribulation, often located at Petra.

The beast and 666

A single future individual, the antichrist.

The mark

A literal future technology — chips, barcodes, ID systems.

Babylon

A rebuilt literal Babylon, a revived Roman empire, or a global economic order.

The seven kings

Future kingdoms, or a revived Rome.

The three angels and the harvest

A last worldwide proclamation during the tribulation, and a warning against the literal future mark. The grain harvest gathers the saved; the winepress is the battle at the return, with the 1,600 stadia taken by some as a measured distance.

The bowls

The second half of the tribulation, taken literally: sores, bloodied seas, scorching heat, darkness, and a dried Euphrates to let the eastern armies march. The seventh bowl is the climax just before the return.

Armageddon

A literal battle in the Jezreel valley.

The marriage supper

Heaven’s celebration immediately before the return. In dispensational readings the supper is a distinct event with the church already gathered, and the Rider of 19:11 follows as the visible, public second coming.

The rider on the white horse

The literal second coming, ending the tribulation and opening the millennium.

The binding of Satan

Entirely future. Satan is bound only after the return, for a literal thousand years, and released once more at the end.

New heaven and earth

Genuinely future, after the millennium.
