Four Lenses on Revelation — Preterist
four-lenses-on-revelation
The frame
Must soon take place and the time is near are taken at face value — the book names its own audience, and a reading unintelligible to them fails its stated purpose. 1:7 divides the school: partial preterism keeps the return future; full preterism reads the coming with clouds of AD 70, with Matt 24:30 and 26:64 behind it.
The seven letters
Seven real congregations in Asia Minor, chosen as representative types.
Come up here
John’s visionary ascent.
The seals
Roman conquest, the civil war of 68–69, famine, plague — or the Jewish War of 66–70.
The 144,000
Jewish Christians, or the church under a census image.
The trumpets
The Jewish War and Rome’s campaigns.
The two witnesses
Two figures in the Jerusalem of the revolt — often Peter and Paul, or the prophetic witness of the church in the city before it fell.

Rome-preterism: symbolic — a broken seven. Jerusalem-preterism: literal — the Jewish War, Feb 67 to Sept 70.
The woman and the dragon
Israel, bringing forth the Messiah; her flight into the wilderness the Jerusalem church’s escape to Pella before the siege.
The beast and 666
Neron Caesar in Hebrew gematria.
The mark
Emperor-cult participation and trade-guild membership — economic exclusion.
Babylon
Rome — though a significant minority argue Jerusalem, the harlot who killed the prophets.
The seven kings
Roman emperors.
The three angels and the harvest
The eternal gospel and the fall of Babylon announced ahead of the judgment on the persecuting power — Rome, or apostate Jerusalem on that branch. The winepress trodden outside the city answers to the siege rather than to a future battle.
The bowls
The same judgments as the trumpets, now total rather than a third — recapitulation, not a later series.
Armageddon
Symbolic of the Roman conflict.
The marriage supper
The hallelujah is over a Babylon already fallen — Rome, or Jerusalem on that branch. The supper divides the school: partial preterism keeps it future along with the Rider and the resurrection; full preterism reads it of the new-covenant order begun in AD 70, the Bride being the church.
The rider on the white horse
The branch-point. Partial preterism keeps this as the bodily return, still ahead. Full preterism reads it as the judgment-coming against Jerusalem in AD 70.
The binding of Satan
Already accomplished — at the cross, or at AD 70. What follows is either the present age or a coming age of gospel success.
New heaven and earth
Every school except full preterism reads this as genuinely future — which is also preterism’s pressure point, since Rome fell and no city descended. Full preterism puts 21–22 at AD 70 as well.
